Racism vs. the Sinful Heart

It's been awhile since I have written a blog post and this is probably not the one to start back up again. But in light of what has recently been elevated to national news and all the racial slurs being thrown around this has been heavy on my heart. As you read this I pray you read it with an open heart and mind to receive it in the spirit it is intended. When I write, I write with Love and a desire not to criticize or disregard peoples hurts and pains, but in an effort to inspire people to think outside their own thoughts and opinions to realize we are all uniquely different and uniquely special.

I believe in equality. I believe all lives matter. I believe we need to learn not to be 'color blind', but to receive all people for who they are and where they come from.

I also believe we were all born sinners and broken people. We live in a world that is gripped with sin and we try to do the best we can, but it will never be enough. I believe we all need to find sanctification through Jesus Christ, who I believe died for all our sins, past, present and future. I believe we need to Love like Jesus Loves.

Now to talk about diversity. And here's where I will likely start to make some folks mad. It seems every time the word diversity gets used it is in relation to ethnic differences, sexual orientation and things like that. True diversity however goes beyond that. Diversity by definition means 'the state of being diverse. And diverse is 'showing a great deal of variety; very different.' So, as I mentioned before I believe all individuals are unique and different. We all come from different places and backgrounds, so diversity in it's purest form goes beyond race and sex and religion and goes to who a person is at their core and accepting them for it. Too many times the talk of diversity misses this basic concept and ends up being all about those who are considered minorities. And then not all individuals get a chance to speak.

I'd also like to take a moment to talk about 'White Privilege.' I have heard this term a lot lately and the more I hear it the more it bothers me. What is 'White Privilege' anyway? It seems to me that it is saying that because I am 'white' I don't understand what other people experience. That in itself seems like it is excluding people based on the color of their skin and I think it needs to be stopped. You may be right in saying that I don't understand your struggles, but do you think you understand mine? I grew up without freedom to go to the bathroom when I needed to unless it was in my 'pee' jug. Then one time a day I could empty it and use the toilet. My meals consisted of raw potatoes and beans. The windows were nailed shut with black plastic on them so I could not tell the time of day except when I heard the house go quiet. There were padlocks on the doors to make sure I didn't get out when I wasn't supposed to. So you say 'white privilege', I say we are all diverse and need to accept everyone's differences, whether it's apparent on the outside or not.

What this comes down to is stereotyping and being afraid of what we do not understand. When I was a teenager I was followed around stores because I was stereotyped. Then I got my first car and I was pulled over for no other reason than it being a large Cadillac, oh, and that I had my headlights on in the middle of the day. People put labels and stereotypes on everyone, it doesn't matter who you are. Those stereotypes then create a fear based on who we think that person is. And when we lash out in that fear people get hurt. This continues everyday in every part of the world. It is more than a race issue. It is a reflection of a sinful heart.

To be sure, I am outraged at the recent acts of violence that have taken the lives of  people like George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor! I think those responsible should pay the penalty and justice should be served. Was it a crime of racism? I don't know. Only God knows the heart of a man. Was it wrong? Absolutely! I do however believe this goes way beyond racism. This is a heart issue. People are selfish. People fear what they do not understand. Is there corruption in the government and law enforcement? Again, I say absolutely! But it doesn't matter who is elected to office or on the police force. As long as people are there, there will be corruption. Power is abused everyday and has been since the beginning of the world. But there are good people there as well. And to judge all police officers and government officials by the acts of few is expressing the same kind of racism that we are saying we are fighting.

It's interesting the response to this as well. I received an email from the school district the other day as well and it is interesting how these subjects are being approached. I quote, "we must do more to support the unique needs of our students of color in order to create the equitable community of learners and society that we envision." I could be wrong, but isn't isolating people based on the color of their skin and treating them different the root of the issue? So how is doing this going to help gain equality?

And then there is the violence. Making other people suffer for the acts of people who look the same? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the message that is supposedly being sent? But it's OK to loot and pillage in the name of standing up for what is right. This is a ridiculous statement!

I completely believe in standing up for what we believe, but it can be done in a way that doesn't hurt others! Basically the message that rioting and looting sends is that, if that person can do wrong and break the law it is OK for me to do the same. Again, a heart issue.

The truth is there are people hurting everyday. Hurt and pain do not choose a specific 'type' of people. There are children suffering abuse, there are people that are wrongfully treated by the 'law', by piers, by friends and even family. But the media and news controls what we 'hear' about. They tell us what is important and what to get upset about. They don't want to tell us about the people that have died by the hand of someone of the same race. There are people dying everyday. All colors, all backgrounds and all areas of life, but we only hear about the ones they want us to hear about.

There is hurt in this world and until we recognize it for what it is and address it as such we are not going to make progress towards a better community. It is sin. Plain and simple. Sin makes us all victims. Sometimes from our own choices and sometimes from the choices of others. But sin is the problem. Jesus example shows us that we must hate sin, but Love the sinner. We are people that are victims of our own circumstances, but it is time to stop being the victim.

So am I any different? No, my heart is a mess, just like everyone else's. That's why I need Jesus. We have all had hurt and pain. We all have a past and a present where we face problems and persecutions. We all want to make a better day for our children and Loved ones. Jesus is the answer to the whole issue. If our hearts are healed we won't lash out from the hurt we have had to bear. We lash out from undealt with pain and unforgiveness that we hold in our hearts. We form opinions about others based on our life experiences and previous relationships we have had, whether good or bad. Even names. It is easy to associate the pain experience with the name of the person who inflicted it. For instance, you have formed opinions about who I am based on this article.

So what do we need to do? Change doesn't happen easy or quickly when it comes to our hearts and the pain we have experienced. First, deal with the hurt. Address it and receive healing. I found Jesus when I was cold and alone in a dark room as a child and he gave me a hope of a better day. And I am here to tell you that there is a better day. We can get past this, but the only person we can change is ourselves. Forcing change in peoples hearts does not work. Only God can change a heart.

Now, here's the hard part. Treat each person with Love. The Bible tells us that we are to Love God and Love People. When we look in Love and understanding on all people it makes it easy to accept them for who they are and not who we think they are. The other thing that helps is prayer. I know this can come off as an cliche answer, but what I mean is for you to pray for the people who you are angry with. This works.

Sometimes this can seem impossible and you will likely not even mean it at first, but if  you keep doing it, you will see a change. I will warn you though, most of the time the change is not in the individual you are praying for, but in your heart. This is important because hate and unforgiveness in your heart will consume you, if you leave it unchecked. I speak from experience. When I started praying for my step dad he was dead, so there was no changing him. But the change came in me. The hurt started to heal and the pain started to go away.

So to close I will say it again. I believe we are all unique and special. I believe we all need to look past our own tinted experiences to receive people for who they are and not who we think they are. And I don't expect you to agree with me on everything, but I ask that you take my thoughts as they are intended, in Love.

Be Joyful Always

Be Joyful Always
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 & Philippians 4:4-9

Rejoice in the Lord always
I will say it again, Rejoice
Not an easy decision
But we all have a choice
You see, joy is not about being happy
Take it from Paul
Used to be Saul
A ‘holier than thou’ man of religion
Thought he was a good man
Raised in the faith
Until Jesus met him face to face
He saw the error of his ways
And turned to God to give Him all praise
But conversion was not easy
His life became hard
Rejected by his friends
Always on his guard
Not received by the Christians
He was a murderer
In a state of repentance
Looking for acceptance
He was beaten and bruised
Stoned, shipwrecked, even abused
Thrown in jail and put in chains
Told he would fail, and nothing else remains
He found a secret that carried him through it all
He said, “I have learned to be content in all situations”
And all life’s stations
In plenty or in need
So what is this secret
I need to see
Can’t stand to live in want
But I can’t get free
No matter how much I receive
It never satisfies
This life is born in lies
So what does Paul say?
What’s this secret that so few seem to find?
Be Joyful Always!
That’s the start, but it doesn’t end there
If it did, it wouldn’t be fair
Paul gave us instructions
On how follow this command
Pray Continually!
Like streaming On Demand
Your conversation with God
Should never end
Like a chat stream blowing up by the minute
It’s always exciting when God is in it
Like wigglesworth said
“I rarely spend more than a half hour to pray
But I don’t go more than a half hour
without something new to say”
So keep that prayer line open
And continue to share
Cause God’s always listening
And will always care
Then take time to listen as He talks to you
Prayer is a conversation between you two
If your prayer time is like a monologue
Something is wrong
Your talking too long
It’s time to stop
And now we can move on
But before we do
Let’s recap from the start
Be Joyful Always
This comes from the heart
Pray continually
Is the second part
So to wrap up this story
The final piece, gives God the glory
Give Thanks in any and all things
And what does this Thankfulness bring
A new focus is the first thing I see
Takes our eyes of the negative
Going on around me
And allows me to thank God
For the blessing he brings
As Corrie said
“Thank you for the fleas!”
I may not always see a reason
It may seem like the wrong season
But many seasons of growth
Begin with seasons of pain
God uses the circumstance of the world
To teach us new things
He doesn’t bring the pain
I want that to be clear
But He’ll use the pain
To guide us through the fear
“What doesn’t kill me
Makes me stronger”
Since I’m not dead
I must stay on the path longer
Pain produces perseverance
Because it puts faith to the test
Without facing struggles
We would never see God’s best

Think about the cross
Ultimate pain and loss of Hope
Jesus was dead and in the grave
His friends facing the most horrible pain
But Joy comes in the morning
So don’t give up now
And find reason to give thanks!
Like Christ’s death brought ultimate life
Your struggle will be bring new things

So, Rejoice in the Lord, for he is near
Pray all the time, even through your fear
Present yourself to God
With thanksgiving in your heart
Then comes the most amazing part
His Peace that passes all understanding
Will guard your heart
and mind
And you find
The final passage
Phillipians 4, verses 8  and 9

Whatever is true, noble and right
Whatever is pure, lovely and admirable
Anything that is excellent or praiseworthy
Think about these things!

Focus your mind on the good
And find yourself in the Lord
And contentment will come
No matter what you can afford
And Paul wraps up this verse with this:
Whatever you have learned or heard from me
Put it into practice
So Be Joyful and always pray
Give thanks in all you do
And all you say
And the God of peace will be with you
Now and always!

Troubled Heart

Troubled Heart

My heart is troubled
And I can’t seem to think
My mind is cloudy
Like I’ve had too much to drink
I’m drowning in my sorrows
But what does it mean?
I’ve sinned and I can’t get past it
At least that is how it seems
But is that the truth?
Can I really not get past my sin
Is there proof?
That God won’t let me in?
Has His voice grown quiet
Can I try and fight it?
Is it even something I can earn?
What have I learned?
Is it even based on what I do?
If it is, there is no way I can get through
So I look to the Word that was planted in me
When God’s Love poured out
Was it enough to set me free?
God’s Word says no condemnation
For those who believe
God’s word says new life
For those who receive
So what do I believe?
What have I been given?
I’m talking about Christ
Who was dead, but is now risen
He conquered death
But that’s not all
He took sin and pain
When the world thought he’d fall
Jesus came back
And conquered it all
But what does it mean for me?
How does what Christ did
Change the things I see?
In my life I see pain
Caused by the things I do
I’ve hurt so many people
Forgiveness can’t be true
Everywhere I look
Is another reminder
As I go through life
I could really use some blinders
But then there’s this story
Of a man who became a king
As I read on
I discover a curious thing
He was said to be a man
After God’s own heart
But then he sinned
And his life fell apart
In his apathy
He took another man’s wife
Then on the verge of exposure
He took that poor man’s life
So what started as a thought
Ended in 5 broken laws
And God forgave Him
And now I have to pause
And reflect
What God did for him
He could also do for me
I see Ephesians 2 verses 1-10
How God truly set me free
Because I was dead
In transgression and sin
Following the ways of this world
I could never win
But then
There was God
And what He did no one could change
He gave His Son
So that I could be rearranged
It is by mercy
That I don’t get the death I deserve
And by grace
That I receive the place that is reserved
For me in heaven
That’s what I see in verse seven
Then in eight
It breaks it down plain
It is by grace, through faith
Salvation is God’s gift I gain
Nothing I’ve done
Or will ever do
Could ever bring this gift
To me or to you
It is a free gift
That comes straight from our Savior
But once we get it
It should change our behavior
For we are God’s workmanship
It says in verse nine
To do works that were prepared
Before the beginning of time
Now created in Christ Jesus
We now begin to shine
So whoever you were
You are no longer
Whatever bound you before
God has made you stronger
You’ve been saved and set free
Your sins thrown into a forgotten sea
Now to live a life
That reflects His glory
From this day forth
Jesus is weaved into your story
So when you look at your life
You may see a mess
But God sees Jesus blood
And only your best
So stop looking back
Look only to the Lord
Looking to God
And your eternal reward
Cause today is a new chapter
A new page in your story
That will take you step by step

Into His Eternal Glory!

Power of Prayer

The Power of Prayer

By Terence Wright (based on a message from Matthew Wright)

Prayer. What do we say? What can we see?
Why do we pray and tell God our needs?
First and foremost because God said
In the morning, during the day and right before bed
In the Word it mentions prayer over 400 times
And prayer is the reason I’m writing these rhymes
So let’s start by asking a question or two
About why the bible says prayer is the thing to do
Prayer builds relationship with our Father God
And brings His will on this place that we trod
So that’s why, but now how?
What should we say?
We need to start by glorifying God everyday
Next? To bring His will from the bible
Cause we know what it says is reliable
Now for our needs, in trouble or peace
No matter the situation we should be on our knees
What about forgiveness? Let’s focus on that now
We ask for forgiveness, but let’s break it down
He will forgive us
But this verse is connected to another
We are forgiven to the point that we’ve forgiven our brother
And last but not least to keep us from sin
And then it ends in glorifying God once again
Each day the same as Jesus directed us to pray
In Matthew 6:9-13 He told us what to say
So one more question, one more thing that I ask
If God is so sovereign why is prayer our task?
Because God has given all power and authority to us, through Christ
And He wants to help us in our life
So, in closing let me say this last thing broken in two
Prayer is exercising the authority
That Jesus took back for you
And invites God to move on this earth in all that you do

The Name of Jesus!

“At the name of Jesus every knee will bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth” - Philippians 2:10 This verse has never more real to me than it was last week. I've always known that the name of Jesus holds power. I've heard all the Bible stories, but now I have my own story. Let me take you back to Thursday morning. Most mornings I would have left for work a couple of hours earlier, but this was a Thursday. On Thursdays, my son Tristen has a class that starts earlier than usual, so riding the bus is not an option for him. This particular day, I was planning on working from home, then taking him to school and heading into the office. That was the plan, but that plan changed at 6:40am. I was already busy on my computer, having started at six, when I heard my wife, Nicole, start screaming my daughters name. “Janée!” she yelled. A moment later I heard my name called out frantically from the other end of the house. I quickly got up and headed into the house. Janée had stayed home with a fever the day before and so I figured she must be throwing up or something. Most the time Nicole handled the kids being sick like a pro, but when it comes to unexpected throw up that ends up everywhere, we can all use some help. As I headed in the direction of my frantic wife, then I saw her and panicked, one of my worst fears realized. I saw my daughter. She was in my wife’s arms. That in itself wasn’t out of the ordinary, but this time it was different. Janée was lying limp and lifeless with her eyes rolled back in her head. She wasn’t responding or acknowledging any of us. In normal circumstances it is easy for me to stay calm and collected. This was different. This was my daughter. My mind went cloudy. All that first aid training went out the window as I quickly grabbed her from my wife. I couldn’t think. I didn’t know what to do. I wanted to pray, but I couldn’t find the words. As I held her close and carried her over to the couch to lay her down I managed to force one word from my lips. “Jesus,” I whispered into her ear. I cried out again, this time with a little more volume, “Jesus”. At that moment she sat up and spoke as if nothing had happened, “Mom…..dad, what’s wrong?” I looked up and asked her if she was ok. With a confused look she said that she felt fine. We told her what had happened and that there were paramedics on the way to check her out. When the paramedics got there they checked her out and did everything from checking her temperature to her blood sugar and everything in between. According to them she was perfectly healthy, but they recommended we take her into Emergency to have them take a look, just in case. I did that as well and still nothing. They wrote it off as a fluke incident and told us to keep an eye on her, but they don’t think there are any issues. Later that day I asked Janée if she remembered what happened. She said that she remembered getting out of bed and walking into the bathroom. Nicole was in there doing her make-up and she asked her why she hadn’t woke her and her brothers up yet. As Nicole began to answer Janée said she was feeling dizzy. The next thing she remembered was being on the couch and wondering how she had gotten there. After she had started feeling dizzy Nicole had grabbed her to keep her from falling and ran her out to me. I can’t say for sure what happened and neither can the doctors. What I do know is this, something had happened that caused Janée to pass out and become unresponsive. She was like that for about a minute until the name of Jesus was spoken into her ear. Once Jesus name was spoken she came back to her senses and hasn’t had any lasting effects or issues. It would be easy to write this off as a ‘fluke incident that just happens,’ but I need to give glory to whom glory is due. My daughter was brought back to me by Jesus name. In Philippians we see that Jesus is seated at the right hand of God and at His name every knee will bow. Everything has to come under the Name. Whether it be sickness, disease or anything else. Jesus name is above all other names.

Ephesians 6:13

Ephesians 6:13 – Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and when you have done everything, to stand.

Paul paints a vivid picture of a knight getting ready to defend his castle. We are to put on the full armor of God, as he says. This is in the spiritual, though, not in the natural; for “our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”
As we see this picture of a knight getting ready for battle we see that each piece of his equipment represents a different characteristic that we are to take on. We start with truth as a belt. For a knight everything hangs off the belt and so it is with us; everything hangs off the Truth of God. If not based on the Truth everything would come from a lie; so we must start with the Truth.
Then we need righteousness which is the image of a breastplate. Our righteousness comes from Christ and because of Him we are called the righteousness of God. Next we have readiness, which is represented as a covering for your feet. This stems from the peace that comes with the gospel of Jesus. If we are living in fear or worry we will not be ready to do God’s calling.
Now we come to faith. Faith is our shield; with it we believe God and therefore block all of the attacks of the enemy. Faith is also how we receive salvation, the next piece of the armor, which covers our heads and protects our thoughts. That is our defense. Most of our equipment is for defense, but last of all we take up the sword of the Spirit; the Word of God. This is our weapon. We use the Word to fight our battles. God’s Word has power and He has given us the authority to use it.

And now that you have done everything, stand. Stand on all that God has done for you through Christ Jesus our Lord.

The Focal Point by Billy Graham

The Focal Point

Taken from “Hope for Each Day” devotionals by Billy Graham

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last.” - Revelation 22:13

The central message of the Bible is Jesus Christ.

In Genesis, Jesus is the Seed of the Woman. In Exodus, He is the Passover Lamb. In Leviticus, He is the atoning Sacrifice. In Numbers, the Smitten Rock. In Deuteronomy, the Prophet. In Joshua, the Captain of the Lord’s hosts. In Judges, the Deliverer. In Ruth, the Heavenly Kinsman. In the six books of Kings, the Promised King. In Nehemiah, the Restorer of the nation. In Esther, the Advocate. In Job, my Redeemer. In Psalms, my Strength. In Proverbs, my Pattern. In Ecclesiastes, my Goal. In the Song of Solomon, my Satisfier. In the prophets, the coming Prince of Peace. In the gospels, He is the Christ who came to seek and to save. In Acts, He is the Christ risen. In the epistles, He is Christ exalted. In Revelation, He is Christ returning and reigning.

The message of the Bible is the story of salvation through Jesus – and the whole world needs to know this story. Whom have you told today?

**I thought this was a great explanation of how the story of Jesus has been weaved throughout the whole Bible and I wanted to share.**
