Romans 6:11-12 - In the same way, count yourselves dead to
sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your
mortal body so that you obey its evil desires.
Do not let
sin reign in your body. Until Christ returns and we are all made perfect in Him
we will have a sinful nature. This nature used to control us and we would
follow its every desire. Then Christ came in and set us free from sin.
Now we have a
choice. We are no longer bound to follow the sinful nature, but unfortunately
it is still there. It desires the things that are not of God and will try to
lead you away from Him, but you don’t have to obey it.
As Paul talks
about it here he says, “Count yourselves dead to sin, but alive to God.” Then
again, “Do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil
desires.” The more we let sin into our lives the harder it becomes to resist
it. Even though we have been set free from it, we can still be following it.
So the more
you do things that satisfy your sinful nature the more it will reign in you. In
the same way the more you do to satisfy the spiritual nature, the more it will
reign in you. What nature are you feeding? What are you focusing on?
If you want to
rid yourself of sin don’t focus on the sin. It is not going to help if you just
think about trying not to sin. It may work for a short time, but your focus is
still on the sin. If you want to rid yourself of sin, focus on God. Get more of
God in you and feed your spirit. Then it will reign in you and your dominating
desires will be good.
