Matthew 11:28-30 - “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your soul. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
Life can be hard. Jesus told us that we will face hardship and trials. Some of it may be as a result of our actions, but some of it is just because we live in a fallen world. We face pressure and stress everyday. Most often it is because we try and taken the burdens ourselves.
Some of this stress comes from the idea that we need to provide for ourselves and our families. We grow weary because we cannot handle the load. Instead of rebuking us or scolding us for taking on things that we shouldn’t Jesus speaks to us with the voice of compassion. “Come to me,” He says, “all you who are weary and burdened.”
Jesus includes all of us in that statement, because we have all been there before. In fact, there are some of you who are there right now. Jesus is speaking to you. He wants you to give all your worries and cares to Him.
“Take my yoke and learn from me,” Jesus continues. What we must realize is that we are taking too much on ourselves. We worry about paying the bills and what we will eat or what we will wear. In Matthew 6 Jesus tells us to ‘seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you.’
Now, just to clarify, I’m not saying don’t work. What I am saying is don’t look to your own ability to provide. We must look to God as our provider. Christ says, “My yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Jesus has already given His cares and worries to God and He is directing us to do the same. In God we will find rest. Let Him take care of you.
